  1. Ayala     4    nos.
  2. Turmeric Powder     ½    tsp
  3. Chilli Powder     1½    tsp
  4. Pepper Powder     ½    tsp
  5. Salt to taste    ½    tsp
  6. Oil for frying    ½    cup
  7. For the Masala
    1. Onion  sliced    3    nos.
    2. Ginger  , chopped    3    tbsp
    3. Garlic  , chopped    3    tbsp
    4. Tomatoes      3    nos.
    5. Chilli Powder      ½    tsp
    6. Turmeric Powder      1    pinch
    7. Fennel Seeds(Perumjeerakam)  Powder    1½    tsp
    8. Cloves (Kariampo)  Powder    ½    tsp
    9. Fenugreek Powder      ½    tsp
    10. Curry Leaves      1    stalks


  1. Clean fish and cut gashes. Mix all ingredients listed under (1)except oil in to a smooth paste and marinate the fish and keep aside for ten minutes.
  2. Heat oil and 2tbsp in a pan fry the fish till it is cooked. Keep the fried fish aside.
  3. In the same pan saute onions, ginger, garlic and curry leaves.Saute till it is golden brown.
  4. Add tomatoes and fry till it becomes soft and mushy and oil separates. Add chilly powder, turmeric powder,fennel powder, fenugreek powder and clove powder listed under (2) and saute for a minute.
  5. Sprinkle a few drops of water and mix. Scoop out half of the masala from the pan and evenly spread the rest and place the fish on top.
  6. Now spread the reat of the masala on top of the fish, cover and cook in low flame for about three minute. You can turn over the fish in between.
  7. You can drizzle lemon juice just before serving
  8. Serve with rice.
